WELCOME to hobbit_smut - Phurveyors of Phreferred Pheriannath Phorn!!!

The hobbit_smut Community is no longer an active community. It remains as an archive of all the stories written over its lifetime. Feel free to come on in and explore. All the challenges are both linked and tagged to be easy for you to find. If you read and enjoy, please DO leave a comment. The authors ARE, for the most part, still around and active in the fandom and would appreciate hearing from you! If you are exploring how a community like this is set up and run, all those posts are available for your review. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact the caretaker mod elanorgardner at elanor.gardner@verizon.net.

PURPOSE
To provide individuals who write Lord of the Rings fan fiction (and readers as well!) with some excitement in their writing (and reading!) of hobbit smut, i.e. stories about hobbits in adult situations, doing adult things, saying adult words, and using adult body parts. The excitement? Well, that comes in the form of challenges to your creativity as a writer. We don’t let you wander about writing whatever you wish – no, no, no. We give you a challenge to meet and a time frame to meet it in. (And sometimes we have prizes!).
NOTE: Obviously, hobbit_smut is an adult community. You must be above the age of consent in your country to watch ("friend") or be a member of this community.
Stories written by community members in response to the hobbit_smut challenges are archived in three ways: on the home page of the community in the sidebar listing, in the memories of the community (or just click on the heart icon above), and in the tags (or click on the "challenges" tag at the bottom of a challenge summary and you will see all the summary posts filtered in your view of the community).
PROCESS
On a regular basis the hobbit_smut moderators (that's us - abby_normal and elanorgardner) will post a challenge entry requesting a specific story written to specific rules, which could include (but is not limited to): length, subject matter, pairing, pov, and/or specific words to be included in the stories.
The mods will post reminders in the community hobbit_smut as needed for each challenge, to remind both the members and the “watchers” of the upcoming deadline, indicating the appropriate time to begin posting stories to the community.
The member writers will then post their challenge stories to the community, using the established format (story formatting instructions are here) , and all will rejoice and enjoy excellent smut.
RULES FOR ALL (Rules for Members are here)
The hobbit_smut Live Journal Community is a limited membership community. Member writers may join the community by invitation only, however anyone above the age of consent in their country may “watch” (i.e. friend the community). The moderators will not respond to requests to join the community.
The hobbit_smut Live Journal Community invites watchers to make comments on the challenge stories, but hobbit_smut will not tolerate 'flames', personal attacks, whinging, or other immature behaviour. Any comments the moderators deem inappropriate will be immediately deleted, non-members making such comments will be banned. We are here to have fun and to encourage our member authors to produce excellent fic.
Challenges will include both interhobbit and interspecies (one species must be hobbit!) het and slash, but only FPS, not RPS. Challenges will focus on hobbit smut, but will not be uptight about it and may wander into dark fic and other fun stuff (i.e. excellently written fics are our goal, not specific sexual acts on page x). (And we may even add fan art to our challenges later!)
Warnings will be clearly indicated on every story (see story formatting instructions here), so if you don't like a particular genre, pairing, plot-point, or topic, don't read the story. If you just cannot live without wanking, take it to your own LJ.
Although we do, for the moment, allow anonymous comments, IP logging is turned on.
QUESTIONS/COMPLAINTS/IDEAS
CREDITS
We also realize there are many challenge communities out there all with different purposes and different audiences. The idea for this community resulted from many different LJ and IM conversations between hobbit smut authors and the influence of similar communities in other fandoms.
willow_wode came up with the phrase "Pheriannath Phorn" and we thank her for letting us borrow it!
FAQ
Question: Can "watchers" make comments on the stories?
Answer: Absolutely. Just abide by the rules and heed the warnings.
Question: Do members have to respond to a certain number of challenges to remain members?
Answer: No, although the more smut the merrier (or pippiner).
Question: Will you have a specific time for stories written in response to a challenge to be posted or do we just post when we are ready?
Answer: Yes we will. We will ask you to hold your posts until one week (7 days) prior to the due date. The reasons? (1) Watchers will know when to start looking for the stories, (2) More excitement and feedback will be generated in a shorter timeframe around all the stories posted, (3) Watchers and lurkers can enjoy coming back to the challenge stories for a period of time before the stories for the next challenge start being posted, and (4) It encourages our member writers who take the time to have their stories betaed and edited.
Question: Can I post my stories in my own LJ or on my website before or at the same time as the challenge posting?
Answer: Again, to focus the excitement on the week of the challenge postings and on all the stories posted to the challenge, we ask member writers not to post the story in their own LJ or on their own website until 7 days after it is posted to the community.
Question: If a member writer is feeling prolific or being bitten my many ravenous plot bunnies, may they post more than one story in response to their challenge?
Answer: REVISED 25 June 2004 On further consideration, because of the nature of some "contests" planned for the future, the mods have determined that a member writer may post only one fic answer to a given challenge. If an author writes more than one, they may post their favourite one meeting the requirements to the community and post the rest in their own LJ, although we would love a mention that all that extra inspiration came from the challenge!
Question: Does a challenge stating a word count of 5000 mean that it must be exactly 5000 words?
Answer: REVISED 25 June 2004 We assign word count based on the topic of the challenge. The more complex topics get a longer word count and more time for completion. We will allow a specific margin on either side of the word count - up to 20% over or 20% under the stated word count is acceptable.
Question:Got a banner I can put on my web page?
    Answer: You bet!

To get a banner like this one for your web site to link to the community pages, go to the bottom of this post and click on Hobbit Smut Banners for further instructions and samples of the eight different banners available.
Question:I'm not going to make the deadline! What do I do?
Answer: Plead your case to the mods via email (abby_normal at Aratlithiel@lightindarkplaces.net or elanorgardner at elanor.gardner@verizon.net). Depending on the circumstances, you may be allowed to post up to 7 days after the deadline (no later), but only with specific permission.
Question:I keep trying to join so I can see the stories, but it doesn't seem to work. What do I need to do?
Answer: You need to "friend" hobbit_smut. As a "friend", you can read all the posts in the community on your own friends' list, and, if you wish, make comments as well. (We do track URLs, just in case. But as long as you abide by the rules, you can comment on posts any time.) Even "members" of a community have to "friend" a community to see the posts. To "friend" hobbit_smut, simply go up to the top of this User Info page and click on the little LJ User head with a plus sign on it (it says "Monitor Community" if you hover over it). When you do, your LJ username will show up in the "Watched by:" list below and you are set!
Question: May I include art or photomanips with my story?
Answer: Since we are a fic community and we really want the focus to remain on fics AND since our "watchers" friended the community to read stories by our member authors, we feel that it is only fair to keep the content of the community to fics only, at this point. Members should feel free to illustrate their stories or accept illustrations from others, and simply post them to their own journals rather than in the community.
